Ballia lies in the eastern part of Uttar Pradesh. The district is a part of the Azamgarh district. The district of Ballia consists of six tehsils or talukas called as Ballia, Bansidh, Bairiya, Rasra, Sikandarpur and Belthara. The city of Ballia became popular since the time of Independence as it attained freedom for a short duration during the British Raj. The people of Ballia and nearby districts believe that one of the famous saints Valmiki, the person who wrote Ramayana, resided in Ballia for short duration, hence, there was a shrine built in his memory. However, the shrine does not exist anymore. Apart from the diminished shrine of Valmiki, Ballia has temples and ashrams in huge numbers. Botanical Garden

Botanical garden is one of the most beautiful places in Ballia. This garden is maintained by the government of the city. The garden has a varied collection of herbs, trees, flowers and many ornamental plants. The flowers and plants in the garden give peace, fresh air and serene experience to the visitors.

Dadri

Dadri is about three kilometres from Ballia. Dadri Mela or also known as Dadri fair is held in Dadri in the months of October or November depending on the Hindu calendar. The fair is the second largest cattle fair in India. This cattle fair starts on the day of Kartik Purnima and is held in the honour of Dadar Muni, disciple of Rishi Bhrigu. Traders from all over the world visit this fair to buy quality cattle for themselves.

Bhrigu Temple

Bhrigu temple is one the most famous tourist places in Ballia and is dedicated to saint Bhrigu. The famous festival Dadri fair is held in the honour of Rishi Bhrigu. The temple is located in Dadri and this temple is the main venue for the start of Dadri festival. Many devotees visit this temple to offer their prayers. This temple is considered as auspicious for the people of Ballia.

Ballia Baleshwar Temple

Baleshwar Temple is another famous temple and is crowded with devotees all round the year. The big ghantas in the main corridor are the major attractions of the temple.

Surha Taal

Surha Taal is a lake which is declared as the bird sanctuary since 1991. Here you find various species of migratory birds from Siberia in the winter months from October to February.

Shahid Smarak

Shahid Smarak in Ballia was built in the memory of all the freedom fighters who lost their lives in order to make Ballia a free city. Due to the struggle of these freedom fighters, Ballia became a free city for fourteen days in 1942.

One can easily get a man-pulled rickshaw in Ballia to move from one place to another. The approximate fare of a rickshaw is Rs fifteen for an average one kilometre ride.

Best time to visit Ballia is the winter months which are from October to February. However, if you want to enjoy the main Dadri festival then you need to visit Ballia during October or November during Kartika Purnima.
